Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) - ULTRASOUND

why do I need to fast for my abdominal or abdominal/pelvic ultrasound?

why do i need to fill my bladder for my pelvic, pelvic/transvaginal, abdominal/pelvic, ObstetricAL?

why do i need to fill my bladder for my pelvic, pelvic/transvaginal, abdominal/pelvic, ObstetricAL?

Patient's are required to fast for the abdominal Ultrasound for many reasons:

  1. When you eat, your gallbladder contracts. If your gallbladder is contracted, it can not be properly assessed.
  2. When you eat, a build up of gas may occur. Ultrasound waves do not easily pass through gas. Fatty foods, chewing gum, smoking, soda, juice, and COFFEE* can cause an excess amount of bowel gas.

*If you are having an abdominal and pelvic scan at the same time, we suggest ONLY drinking WATER to fill your bladder. Otherwise, no fluids or food before your abdominal scan!

why do i need to fill my bladder for my pelvic, pelvic/transvaginal, abdominal/pelvic, ObstetricAL?

why do i need to fill my bladder for my pelvic, pelvic/transvaginal, abdominal/pelvic, ObstetricAL?

A full bladder acts as a window to visualize certain structures:

  • In females, a full bladder helps us see the uterus and ovaries. A full bladder is very important as it will push down the uterus allowing us to obtain better  transabdominal images.
  • In males, a full bladder helps us see the prostate and seminal vesicles.

I am on my period/currently bleeding. will this impact the pelvic/transvaginal exam/results?

As long as you are comfortable, our sonographers have no issue performing internal exams with patients who are on their menstrual cycle/bleeding. This will have no impact on your Ultrasound results.

Can I use the washroom before my tranvaginal exam?

Can I use the washroom before my tranvaginal exam?

I am on my period/currently bleeding. will this impact the pelvic/transvaginal exam/results?

YES! The technologist will ask you to empty your bladder before a transvaginal exam is performed.

It is important to empty as much as you can to limit the amount of bladder shadows over pelvic structures internally.

does ultrasound use radiation?

Can I use the washroom before my tranvaginal exam?

does ultrasound gel stain clothes?

does ultrasound gel stain clothes?

The Ultrasound gel is a water based gel that does not stain clothing. At worst, your clothes can get a little damp from the gel. All Ultrasound comes off in the wash. Leftover gel left on your skin will come off easily in the shower.
